National Marathon - 2008

More than one marathon courses through Washington D.C. annually. But the National Marathon is unique.  The city's mayor, who runs annually, proudly boasts that it is the only marathon to contain all 26.2 miles completely within the limits of the district.

2008 marked the third annual running of the National Marathon, now sponsored by Sun Trust.  The secret is quickly spreading - the late winter event is a unique opportunity to experience a richly diverse city.  With only a few thousand runners, the 2008 running was still smaller than perhaps any other major city marathon.  But the rapid growth indicates a future as bright as Chicago or New York's grand events.

Philadelphia Marathon - 2007

It's been called fast and flat.  Equally accurate but less often emphasize is the phrase fan-packed and freezing.

museum.jpgJust as you'd expected from a top-notch city like Philly, the Philadelphia Marathon is without a doubt one of the finest marathons in the USA.

The race begins and ends at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The half mark is also at the museum, with two separate out and back course loops - no repetition between the first and second halves.  Those famous museum steps, instantly recognizable as the site of Rocky Balboa's gray sweat suit stair run and fist flying cheer, are part of the legacy of Philly.  It is suited that runners are pumped by the song Gonna Fly Now, more commonly known as the Rocky theme song, leading up to the gun start.

Stay or Leave - Dave Matthews
matthewsdave.jpgI have a hard time keeping the pace down and consistency true to form.  Recently I went out on a run intending on speed work and wound up doing a hill run.  I was just too pleased with my brisk pace.  Moods that create subtle changes in my drive are constantly influenced by the music I listen to.  Of course, the ‘screamo’ playlist I use probably doesn’t help any.  However, songs on the lighter side of the voice can present a different yet equal push.  Most people know Dave Matthews for his pop radio play tunes that are easily voiced by most of the general population.  I think the real gems lie in many of those which don’t get air time.  Take for example his acoustic version of “Stay or Leave” off his solo album Some Devil.  This song, like so many others has a solid chord pattern completely offset by his shining talent for storytelling.  This piece is numbing in fresh air and comfortable running shoes leading one on a mindless pace of physical exploration no matter where you are or how familiar you are with your run.  There is something about acoustic music to me that just feels raw and unfiltered.  Running by comparison is also a movement of true intent and raw effort.  After hearing “Stay or Leave” on the road I will soon be adding an “acoustic” playlist as well.  Strange how something so familiar when applied under different circumstances can seem so new.  Are you finding yourself bored on your run?  Try an acoustic piece like “Stay or Leave” and let me know where you end up.
Have a good run - Justin

Diet Pitfalls
salad.jpg

Running is an excellent, perhaps the best way to combineexercise with a healthy diet to lose weight.  In spite of claims made by many products, it is all about burning calories. Consumemore calories than you burn and you will gain weight. Burn more than

you consume and you will lose weight.

There are many pitfalls that lead to diet failure.  Here are what I consider some of thebiggest pitfalls that lead to being overweight, and lead to failed diet plans.
